KUWAIT CITY, July 13: The Environment Public Authority (EPA) explained that the fish kill in some areas at Kuwait Bay, as shown in a video clip which went viral on social media, is due to the increase in phytoplankton.

In a press statement, EPA disclosed that after analyzing and studying the satellite images of the bay in the past days, as well as the previous studies on the occurrence of fish kill in the area; they found a significant increase -- above the normal level -- in the number of phytoplankton, reaching tens of millions of cells per liter.

Asked about the reasons for phytoplankton increase, Deputy Director General for Technical Affairs at EPA Dr Abdullah Al-Zaidan attributed it to wrong human activities such as illegal use of rain drainage and disposal of wastewater there. He added that since April, EPA has predicted red tide and fish kill.
