Dust storm sweeps Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Dust storm disrupts UAE; visibility falls below 3,000 meters.

DUBAI, May 5: Residents across the UAE, especially those with dust allergies, are being urged to stay indoors this afternoon as a dust storm sweeps through Abu Dhabi and Dubai. A sudden shift in weather late Monday morning led to strong winds and widespread dust storms by noon, drastically reducing visibility and posing challenges for motorists and pedestrians alike.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), fresh northwesterly winds are currently affecting the region, raising dust and sand in several internal and coastal areas. As a result, horizontal visibility has dropped to less than 3,000 metres in many locations. These conditions are expected to continue until 6pm.

One of the more severe dust events was reported around 12:30pm in Dubai Investment Park and along Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street.

In response to the hazardous driving conditions, Abu Dhabi Police have issued a warning to motorists, advising them to drive with caution and avoid using mobile phones or filming the weather while on the road.

On a positive note, the NCM reported that temperatures are expected to decline slightly over the coming days, offering some relief following a recent heat wave.

Despite this minor drop, temperatures in coastal areas today are forecast to reach up to 44°C, with high humidity levels making the daytime feel even hotter. Across the country, highs will range between 42°C and 46°C, while lows are expected to fall between 20°C and 26°C. Authorities recommend staying well-hydrated and taking heat precautions.

Later in the evening, winds will shift direction from southeast to northeast, remaining light to moderate. However, occasional gusts—reaching speeds up to 40 km/h over the sea—may continue to stir up dust.
