KUWAIT CITY, Nov 29: The price of a box of cucumbers weighing two and a half kilograms in cooperative societies increased to KD1.100, while the price was about a quarter of a Kuwaiti dinar only a few days ago, reports Al Seyassah daily. Former member of the Board of Directors of Kuwaiti Farmers Union Mohammed Al-Motairi attributed this sudden price hike to the scarcity of locally produced cucumbers at this time in almost every agricultural season due to changes in the time of planting and the onset of cold nights. He added the price of cucumbers usually does not exceed a quarter of a Kuwaiti dinar, but the price sometimes increases due to certain market and climatic conditions and will drop once the reasons behind the increase end.

He added: “The Kuwaiti farmer deserves support, especially in light of the increase in production costs, delays and increase in workers’ wages. Agricultural support must be disbursed in full to those who deserve it. The comparison between the selling price of vegetables and fruits in general in Kuwait with that of many European countries shows that the prices in Kuwait are within the reach of consumers.”
