Celine Dion

LOS ANGELES, Feb 1: Amazon-MGM is set to release a poignant documentary, "I Am: Céline Dion," shedding light on the global singing sensation's journey dealing with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder affecting her spinal cord and brain. The film, spanning a year in Dion's life, aims to educate and raise awareness about this little-known condition.

Céline Dion shared her challenges with stiff person syndrome in a statement, expressing how the past couple of years have been a profound struggle. She emphasized her determination not to let the condition define her and her eagerness to resume her performing career. Dion hopes that the documentary will serve as a source of inspiration for others sharing the same diagnosis and contribute to increased awareness.

The official synopsis describes the film as an "emotional, energetic, and poetic love letter to music." Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios, lauded it as a "raw, intimate portrayal of a pivotal time" in Dion's life.

In December 2022, Dion revealed her diagnosis in an Instagram video, explaining how the spasms associated with stiff person syndrome impact her daily life. The condition has prevented her from performing, leading to the cancellation of all future tour dates in May 2023. Despite the challenges, Dion's sister stated in December 2023 that the singer, while grappling with muscle control issues, remains determined to return to the stage.

Stiff person syndrome, a rare autoimmune neurological disorder first diagnosed in 1956, manifests with progressive muscle stiffness and painful spasms in the lower back, legs, and torso. It affects an estimated one to two people in a million.

Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor, known for projects such as the Hulu sex abuse documentary "Leave No Trace: A Hidden History of the Boy Scouts" and HBO's "Trees and Other Entanglements," the documentary explores the emotional and physical toll of Dion's journey.

With a successful career spanning over 40 years and more than 250 million albums sold, Céline Dion's resilience and determination in the face of stiff person syndrome will be unveiled in this compelling documentary. The release date for the film is yet to be announced.
