THE Moroccan monarch King Mohammed VI surprises us every time, especially in his Speech from the Throne with huge steps for the development of his country. He also extends a helping hand every time to our Arab brothers, especially Algeria, where everyone is undoubtedly aware of the role that Morocco played during the Algerian revolution, what it embraced, and what it endured in this regard.

Given that history can neither be erased with the stroke of a pen nor with frivolous practices, King Mohammed VI has worked, since his accession to power to succeed the late King Hassan II, to consolidate an advanced vision in relations with the neighboring country based on the effects of the “Green March” in 1975.

He also worked for the establishment of uncompromising legitimate rights in the Sahara region. He did not pay attention, as his late father did, to the political and security adolescence practiced by Algeria. That is why in his final Speech from the Throne on the occasion of his accession to power, he emphasized that, “… Many people have been wondering about MoroccanAlgerian relations. They are stable, and we look forward to seeing them improve. In this regard, I would like to tell the leaders and people of our sister nation Algeria that no evil will ever be done to them, and no harm will ever come to them from Morocco.

I want them to know that we attach special importance to the bonds of affection, friendship, exchange and interaction between our peoples.” Given that the words of the kings are the king of words, what he mentioned in the speech is the sure expression of the entire Moroccan people, in this regard, of the importance of opening the borders between the two neighboring countries, as it is not only beneficial to Morocco, but also to Algeria, because Rabat is the golden gate to the African continent.

Hence, initiatives stem from it, and everyone witnesses how it has transformed in the past two decades into a regional and international beehive. The king of courageous stances never deviated from the foundations on which the Arab Maghreb Union was built, which was launched from Algeria at the Zeralda Summit in 1988, and was enshrined in the declaration of the establishment of the Arab Maghreb Union in 1989 in the city of Marrakech from five countries – Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania.

The objective of this union was to strengthen the bonds of the brotherhood that binds the member states and their peoples to each other, achieving the progress and well-being of their societies, defending their rights, and opening the borders between the five countries to grant complete freedom of movement for people, goods and capital among them.

Unfortunately, this union witnessed a lot of Algerian procrastination. Although it was expected that the late Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and his fantasy would be a source of concern, he responded to the call of the late King Hassan II and adhered to this union.

While the brothers in Algeria gave priority to the interest of the centers of power in the “Liberation Front” party over the national and regional interest, and they proceeded to escalate through the gangs of the so-called “Polisario” and their support for its terrorism, the whole world stood by Morocco in a right that no one disputes. Today, King Mohammed VI extends his hand once again to Algeria, because he is aware more than ever of the importance of cooperation between the two countries, especially with regard to the repercussions of the international situation and its reflection on the entire Moroccan region.

Therefore, the ball today is in the court of Algeria, which must respond to the royal Moroccan salutation in a manner that is better, and realize that the Kingdom today has become an international development, economic and investment force. There is no escape from cooperation with it, and a way out of the cocoon of personal ambitions that control the Algerian people.
