Bid to curb rise in suicide ‘phenomenon’ in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 7, (Agencies): The Kuwaiti Sociologists Association launched on Monday the ‘Your Life is Precious’ initiative to curb the phenomenon of suicide that has been observed spreading in the country, especially during the COVID- 19 pandemic. In a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the initiative’s launch, Association President Abdullah Al-Radwan stressed the need for community awareness to curb this phenomenon, noting that the initiative came after an increase in suicide cases was seen.

Al-Radwan stressed the importance of intensifying community cooperation to achieve the initiative’s endeavors, which aims to limit the aggravation of this negative phenomenon, indicating that the association was quick to invite government and civil agencies to participate in it. He explained that the motives that lead to an increase in suicides are linked to psychological disorders, social isolation and weak religious faith, in addition to drug addiction and the danger of electronic games. Regarding the implementation mechanism, he indicated that the process of addressing this phenomenon and working to deter it before it occurs is carried out through several methods, including communicating with all embassies and distributing books in all languages to spread awareness on the risks of depression and other factors that lead to suicide.

Al-Radwan indicated that there will be an advertising campaign and the dissemination of information about the initiative on social media channels, in addition to training courses with experienced social and psychological specialists. He stressed the need to seriously address this intrusive phenomenon with full transparency to reach ways to treat and eliminate it and deter similar phenomena, expressing his thanks to the government and civil authorities participating in this initiative.
