LOS ANGELES, Oct 1, (Agencies): A film centered on Beyonce's immensely successful Renaissance World Tour is in advanced negotiations for direct distribution through AMC Theatres, according to sources knowledgeable about the project.
Mega-agency CAA initiated preliminary discussions with major studios and streaming platforms approximately two weeks ago, urging these parties to prepare for a project that Beyonce has been developing for several years. This project is expected to include segments from her top-grossing 2023 live shows, portions of the long-anticipated visual album "Renaissance," and a documentary-style account of the album's creation and the tour's development (with potential appearances by Blue Ivy Carter).
Insiders suggest that the project is targeting a wide release on December 1. By the conclusion of the Renaissance World Tour, ticket sales are projected to approach $560 million.
AMC Theatres' spokesperson has not responded to multiple requests for comment, and CAA has offered no official statement. Attempts to reach Beyonce's spokesperson for comment have been unsuccessful.
This deal with Beyonce comes shortly after Taylor Swift's arrangement for a concert film based on her highly-attended Eras Tour. Reports indicate that Swift's terms are exceptionally favorable, as she self-financed the project and is set to receive over half of the box office revenue. Beyonce is expected to receive a similar arrangement, potentially pocketing more than 50% of the global earnings. The industry is closely monitoring Swift's AMC venture, which is projected to open with over $100 million in October.
AMC's artist-direct deals like these bypass the traditional studio partnerships, which could have significant ramifications for the future of theatrical film distribution.
However, as is often the case with Beyonce's projects, circumstances are subject to change, and secrecy surrounds every aspect of her work. According to a source familiar with the visual album's filming, Beyonce completed a substantial package of music videos nearly a year ago, in November 2022. Fans and admirers worldwide have been eagerly awaiting the release of these visuals, which accompany a Grammy-winning album released in July 2022.
Adding further intrigue and complexity to this deal is Beyonce's existing multi-picture deal with Netflix, stemming from their acquisition of her highly acclaimed Coachella concert film "Homecoming" in 2019. The extent of her obligations to the streaming platform remains unclear, but one thing is certain: no one tells Beyonce what to do.
