Assembly rejects US Middle East peace plan – ‘A Failed plan’

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 5: The National Assembly on Wednesday rebuffed the US Middle East peace plan, calling on the government to remain steadfast in rejecting the plan which neglected Palestinian, Arab and Muslims’ rights in the occupied territories.

This came in a statement that Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim read during a parliamentary session dedicated to discuss the US peace plan and the Assembly’s position.

Al-Ghanim called for an official Arab, Islamic and international rejection of this “failed plan,” and to show full support for the Palestinian people’s steadfastness on their lands. He urged popular and national Arab and Islamic efforts to highlight the systematic crimes committed by the occupation authorities against the Palestinian people. He commended His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s overwhelming support for the Palestinian cause, as well as all governments and parliaments that opposed the US peace plan. He urged the international community to serve justice for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al- Mohammad Al-Sabah presented a brief on the historic positions of Kuwait regarding the Palestinian cause. Sheikh Ahmad Nasser thanked the Assembly for its commitment to discuss the issue which is important for Arabs and Muslims. In 2017, there were rumors that the American administration was drafting a peace plan. His Highness the Amir Sheikh had talks with American President Donald Trump from Sept 7-8, 2017. At the time, HH the Amir stressed the importance of the Palestinian issue and that any solution must be in line with international laws.

The American party requested Kuwait to study the plan before criticizing it, the minister narrated. He highlighted the main and supporting positions of Kuwait on the Palestinian issue during its term as member of the Security Council and while presiding over the council. He said Kuwait objected to America’s decision to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and annex Golan Heights to Israel. He disclosed that on Jan 28, 2020; he received a call from the American National Security counselor to inform Kuwait about the ‘deal of the century’ since America highly regards the wise policy of His Highness the Amir. He added America announced the deal the next day – Jan 29, 2020.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Jan 30, 2020 issued a statement that Kuwait appreciates the American efforts in solving the Palestinian issue. Kuwait also pointed out that a just and permanent solution is possible only through full commitment to relevant resolutions of the United Nations (UN) and in line with international laws. This is in addition to establishing the Palestinian State along the borders with the capital city of East Jerusalem according to the Arab peace plan and UN resolutions, the minister added.

The Assembly released the statement of MPs who totally rejected the so-called ‘deal of the century’; urging the government to stick to its position against such project including refusal to abandon Palestinian, Arab and Islamic rights in the occupied Palestinian territories. It stressed the importance of adopting an official Arab, Muslim and international position to reject the deal and support the Palestinian resistance.

It also underscored the need to intensify national, Arab and Islamic efforts in supporting Palestinians and raising awareness of the free people in the world on the non-stop crimes committed by colonialist Israel. It appreciates the main position of the Kuwaiti political leadership headed by HH the Amir, while praising the positions of parliaments and governments which rejected the ‘deal of the century’.

A number of MPs have agreed on rejecting the deal. MP Ali Al-Daqbassi urged organizations like the Islamic World Organization and Arab League to call for dismissal of Israel from international events; otherwise, these organizations must be evaluated. If proven these organizations are useless, there is no need to spend money on them. This situation will be repeated and the next crime will be worse, he warned.

MP Dr Adel Al-Damkhi said it is rather a ‘slap of the century’, indicating it was too embarrassing to hear Trump say that he expected huge demonstrations against the deal engulfing the world but he saw nothing. “Previously, we were angry at those who did nothing but condemn and issue statements; yet today we see them accepting the ‘slap of the century’ submissively,” he asserted.

MP Osama Al-Shaheen thinks the people of Kuwait are luckier because they are free to express their objection openly, while people in other countries are deprived of this right and they express their opinions secretly. He stressed the Palestinian issue is a Kuwaiti concern as the blood of Kuwaiti martyrs shed on that land.

MP Muhammad Al-Dallal addressed those who said we have nothing to do with the issue and that Kuwaiti interests will be negatively affected by the deal.

MP Adnan Abdulsamad called the deal a ‘robbery of the century’, considering that only 10 percent of the Palestinian land remains. He stressed the Palestinian issue is part of the Muslims’ doctrine.

MP Abdullah Al-Roumi addressed American friends, stating that forcefully taking the land of others is not allowed as per the international law. He said this is what happened in Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion, warning such a situation will recur and the crime by then will be worse. He added he respects the Americans and appreciates their role in liberating Kuwait but the Palestinians must obtain their rights as well.

MP Saleh Ashour said the problem started when the late Egyptian president visited Jerusalem and it worsened through the Oslo 1, Oslo 2, Araba Valley Treaty and relocation of the American Embassy to Jerusalem. He criticized the diplomatic representation of Israel in different Arab countries where the Israeli flag is hoisted. Sadly, some Arab leaders are ‘service providers’ to their ‘master’ in the White House. Arabs should call for providing moral, material and media support to the resistance in order to create a distinctive Arab reality, he added.

MP Khalil Abul pointed out the Palestinian issue is not limited to Arabs and Muslims as it concerns every free human being on Earth. He emphasized the importance of rejecting the expansion policy of Israel, “considering they could reach our land someday.” The Speaker then affirmed that the position of Kuwaiti MPs on the issue will be presented in the parliamentary session slated for Saturday in Jordan.
