YES, we are entitled to pray for mercy on Muammar Gaddafi regardless of his bad political activities, dictatorship and corruption that he perpetrated alongside his children, which nobody disputes. Regardless of those serious misdeeds, he protected the internal security of our dear sisterly country, Libya, with unity among citizens within the territories.

The civil war among various tribes in Libya and the bad memory of DAESH invasion are issues that do not delight friends and foes. The West, represented by the United States, France, Britain and Italy, which participated in dethroning Gaddafi are now biting the fingers of regret. The reason is that Gaddafi became an obedient child of the West towards his last days – when he had a premonition that his government was about to collapse. The inevitable happened sooner than anticipated through the so-called Arab Spring or Hell, no difference!!

Our topic for today is not about Gaddafi nor his government but the lack of people like Gaddafi in Libya. This became pertinent after the incident last week, which looked like a barbaric fiction or unimaginable movie.

It happened in the Libyan city of Sabha on Friday, Nov 18, when an energetic ape owned by someone from Gaddadfa tribe removed the ‘hijab’ (veil) from the face of a female secondary school student from another tribe called, ‘Awlad Sulaiman’. The young girl was in the midst of other students on a street in the city when the ape scratched her face and removed the ‘hijab’.

This incident sparked tribal discrimination which we have been cautioning against while agitating for a civil State. Awlad Sulaiman tribe rose up to protect the honor of their daughter who they believed was degraded by the action of the ape that stripped her face open?!! What a lofty honor that was safe from injury until blood started spilling from both sides. This is exactly what happened.

The stupid action of the ape and honor of the tribe’s girl led to the death of 20 people while 50 others were injured as pandemonium continued. If lives were lost and human blood spilled due to the exposure of a girl’s hair, how many more lives will be claimed and injuries incurred in revenge for those who were killed and injured?!!

This is the reason we are praying for mercy on the corrupt and erratic dictator Muammar Gaddafi. He is the reason why world and regional superpowers are hesitant and tarrying in deposing the regime of corrupt despots such as Bashar al-Assad, since replacements are ambiguous and catastrophic.

If DAESH, al-Nusra Front and al-Qaeda replace Bashar al-Assad and his cohorts, the issue deserves deep thought because it involves implicit evil. The best example is the current civil war in Libya as it has an undertone of extreme fundamentalism and tribalism which we witnessed from the misbehavior of the ape (that was killed in the tribal dispute), as well as the fallout resulting in loss of lives and spilling of human blood?!!
