AMMAN, Jordan: Kuwait’s national judo athlete Abdulwahab Al-Shammari won the gold medal in the under-50 kilogram category at the recently concluded Asian Open Championship for juniors.
Al-Shammari advanced past competitors from Saudi Arabia and Syria in the preliminary rounds before defeating an Iranian opponent in the final, securing gold for Kuwait. The Kuwaiti team finished the championship with a total of eight medals, including four golds and four bronzes.
This victory adds to Al-Shammari’s growing list of achievements. He previously earned second place at the Arab Junior Championship in Jordan in April and won the West Asia Championship in the 42-kilogram category. He has also consistently ranked among the top athletes in domestic competitions.
Al-Shammari is now preparing to compete with Kuwait’s national team at the upcoming World Championship in Bulgaria, where top judo teams from around the globe will participate.
“I am proud to raise Kuwait’s flag at Arab and Asian championships,” Al-Shammari said. “My greatest ambition is to win gold at the World Championship.”
