MEXICO CITY, Jan 30: In a bizarre incident at Mexico City International Airport, a man was taken into custody by police after he opened the emergency exit door of an Aeromexico plane and walked out onto the wing. The incident occurred last Thursday on a flight bound for Central America, specifically Guatemala. Passengers alleged that the drastic action was a result of prolonged delays, leaving them stranded for hours and in need of assistance.

The Mexico City International Airport addressed the chaotic event in a statement, acknowledging that the unusual incident took place on Thursday morning while the plane was grounded, awaiting takeoff to Guatemala. According to the airport’s social media statement, the man “posed on a wing and re-entered the cabin, without any harm to anyone … or the aircraft.”

In compliance with international security regulations, the airport reported that the man was “put at the disposal of the authorities.” USA TODAY has reached out to Aeromexico for further details.

Passenger accounts circulating on social media painted a picture of frustration and discomfort during the delay, with claims of inadequate ventilation and water supply. A letter, reportedly signed by passengers and translated from Spanish, expressed gratitude to the man, stating, “The delay and lack of air created conditions that endangered the health of the passengers. He saved our lives.”

According to the circulating social media posts, passengers asserted that the emergency exit was opened out of desperation after being confined for nearly four hours without proper ventilation or water. The same passenger shared a handwritten photo of a letter, claiming that the plane’s doors were closed, passengers were left uninformed, and there were “elderly ladies on the verge of fainting.”

An incident report filed with airport officials, as reported by the Associated Press, revealed that passengers were unhappy, leading one of them to open the emergency door and step out on the wing. This incident resulted in the need for a plane change.

At least 77 passengers on board Aeromexico flight AM672 reportedly signed the statement circulating online, highlighting the extent of discontent among those affected by the delays.
