As His Excellency Major General Syed Tareq Hussain concludes his mission as Ambassador of Bangladesh to Kuwait, it is fitting to recognise a man who has served his country with dedication and earned the friendship and respect of many in Kuwait.
Since his arrival in July 2024, Ambassador Hussain has worked to strengthen the longstanding relations between Kuwait and Bangladesh. His time here has been filled with meetings, visits and efforts to bring both countries closer, but he has also made time to build friendships with people from all walks of life.
His career speaks for itself. Having joined the Bangladesh Army in 1989, he went on to hold several senior military positions, including commanding an infantry division. He also served on United Nations missions in Angola and Ivory Coast. His years of military service have given him considerable experience, which he has carried into his diplomatic work.
During his mission, he encouraged greater cooperation in trade, investment and other fields. One important achievement was the first Foreign Office Consultations between Bangladesh and Kuwait, held in Dhaka in October 2025.
His affection for Kuwait was especially clear during the difficult events of June 2026. Following the attack on Kuwait International Airport, Ambassador Hussain personally visited the Central Blood Bank to donate blood. His embassy also encouraged the Bangladeshi community to come forward, resulting in around 175 people donating blood. It was a gesture that deserves recognition and appreciation.
Bangladesh's decision to provide Kuwait with 240 tonnes of essential food supplies during the regional tensions was another welcome expression of the strong friendship between the two nations.
Beyond his official responsibilities, Ambassador Hussain has been a familiar and welcome presence at Kuwaiti diwaniyas, community gatherings and diplomatic occasions. His friendly nature, good humour and respect for others have made him a much loved figure among his friends and colleagues.
Diplomatic assignments have a beginning and an end, but the friendships formed during those years often remain for a lifetime. Ambassador Hussain leaves Kuwait with many friends who will remember him with great affection.
As he begins a new chapter, heartfelt wishes go to him, his wife Bilkis Begum Simi and their two daughters.
Kuwait will always welcome him as a friend, and his presence will certainly be missed. May the friendship between Kuwait and Bangladesh continue to grow, and may the years ahead bring him happiness, good health and success.
