6 patients dead in fire at hospital in west India

NEW DELHI, Oct 6, (Xinhua): Six patients died when a massive fire broke out inside an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a government-run hospital in India's western state of Rajasthan, confirmed the local police on Monday.

The fire broke out during the night intervening Sunday and Monday at the Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Rajasthan's capital city of Jaipur. The fire was caused by a short-circuit, added the police.

The ICU was located on the second floor of the hospital. According to the police, the fire spread quickly and released toxic gases, leading to the deaths of the patients. There were a total of 11 patients inside the ICU when the fire broke out. Five patients could be saved from the fire, but remain critical.
