NEW DELHI, Aug 3, (Xinhua): At least 11 people died and four sustained injuries when the private vehicle carrying them fell into a canal in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, confirmed the local police.
The mishap occurred in the state's Gonda district. The victims were returning after offering prayers at a nearby temple when they met with the mishap. There were a total of 15 people, including a few women, inside the ill-fated vehicle.
The state government announced an ex-gratia payment of 500,000 Indian rupees (nearly 5,734 U.S. dollars) to the families of those dead. The injured were admitted to a local hospital.
