Women’s empowerment a top priority of GCC states: Sabeeh

GENEVA, May 31, (KUNA): The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states said Thursday women’s empowerment in the labor sphere is of paramount significance to relevant GCC blueprints and programs. The remark was given by Kuwaiti’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, and Minister of State for Economic Affairs Hind Al-Sabeeh, during the 107th International Labor Conference in her capacity as chairperson of the current session of the GCC Council of Labor Ministers, held in Geneva today. Hailing “young” GCC societies, Al-Sabeeh said young people make up 50 percent in some member states and women constitute the majority of the Gulf population.

Therefore, she maintained, the GCC governments set women’s employment as top priority in the employment domain, with relevant outcomes appearing on the ground. All Gulf pieces of legislation unequivocally state that there must be complete gender equality in view of employment, she pointed out. Al-Sabeeh cited the GCC endorsement of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), as a further reflection of Gulf goodwill and commitment to women’s empowerment, including employment.

The GCC member states have announced a bevy of national drives and strategies chiefly purposed to prop up women’s job and entrepreneurship quota, the Kuwaiti minister added. However, she called on the international community not to shrug off Israeli breaches of Palestinian women’s labor and human rights. Israeli occupation authorities turn a blind eye to all international conventions and resolutions that envision protection to the Palestinian people, she lamented.
