PARIS, Nov 9, (KUNA): The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) has chosen Kuwait to occupy the Arab seat at the institute’s board of directors, said a Kuwaiti diplomat Thursday.

Speaking to KUNA, Kuwait’s permanent envoy to UNESCO Ambassador Dr Meshal Hayat said that the international organization picked Kuwait for this position due to the GCC country’s continuous support to UNESCO. His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the Foreign Ministry played an integral role in choosing Kuwait for this position, said the Kuwaiti diplomat.

Touching on Kuwait’s participation during the 39th General Assembly of UNESCO Dr Hayat said that his country was deputy chair of the current event, which lasts until Nov 14. According to the UIS’s website, the institute, established in 1999, is the first stop for education data from around the world. From primary school enrolments to tertiary graduation rates, the UIS education database is the most comprehensive in the world.

More than 200 countries and territories take part in the UIS annual education survey, which covers all education levels and a range of issues such as gender parity, teachers and financing. The UIS has the mandate to monitor progress towards Education for All and educationrelated Millennium Development Goals. Diverse partners, including governments, donor agencies and other UN organizations, use the statistics, which are updated twice a year.

In particular, the UIS is the primary education data source for the Education for All Global Monitoring Report, the World Development Indicators and the Human Development Report, among others.
