KUWAIT CITY, Jan 24: Twenty labourers were injured — four of them got serious injuries — when the ceiling of a prayer room in an under construction school in Sabah Al-Ahmad City collapsed. The injured were transported by air and land ambulances to Mubarak Al-Kabeer, Adan, Farwaniya and Sabah hospitals. According to sources from the medical sector, 14 of the injured labourers sustained bruises in different parts of their bodies, three got fractures in their vertebral column, two suffered head injuries and one had a leg fracture. Initial investigations revealed the ceiling collapsed when the labourers poured cement on an area measuring 500 square meters. It has been reported that 30 labourers of different nationalities remained unscathed. Injuries varied between bruises, spine, head and thigh fractures, Assistant Undersecretary of the Health Ministry for Supportive Medical Services Dr. Jamal Al-Harbi said to KUNA. Earlier in the day, State Minister of Housing Yasser Abul warned that anyone found negligent in the school collapse would face legal and administrative punishment. Wishing those injured in the incident a swift recovery, he told reporters, “we will not hesitate to hold those found guilty of negligence accountable.”

Meanwhile, the Ahmadi Governor Sheikh Fawaz Al-Khalid has given instructions to follow the health condition of people wounded when part of the mosque which is under construction in Sabah Al-Ahmed collapsed. The governor has also called on the concerned authorities to facilitate the treatment of the people at the Adan, Mubarak Al-Kabir and Al-Sabah hospitals. The Governor has praised the concerned official sectors for quick response, especially the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Health to rescue the injured people and take them to hospitals as fast as possible.

Expat’s death probed: Detectives from Ahmadi Security Directorate have started an extensive investigation to solve mystery surrounding a 26-year old foreigner who fell to his death from a building where he was staying with his friend in Mahboula area. The roommate has since been taken by detectives for questioning. Earlier, the Operations Room of the Interior Ministry was notified about the episode, and a team of rescue officers was dispatched to the scene. The victim was already dead when the team arrived at the location. The remains were referred to Forensics for autopsy.

Traffic cop hit: A highway patrolman, with the rank of sergeant, got minor injuries when a 40-year-old Bedoun driving a US-made vehicle tried to knock him down after he signaled for the latter to pull over along Fahaheel Motorway as his car had no plate number. A hot chase ensued until the suspect was arrested in Jabriya. Initial investigations revealed the suspect was involved in five undisclosed cases. He was referred to the concerned security department. Meanwhile, the highway patrolman was taken to Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital.

Suicide attempted: A 28-year-old Kuwaiti man tried to commit suicide by using a piece of a broken lamp to cut his wrist and neck inside a police station where he was detained for questioning as he was involved in a financial case. Security sources revealed the Kuwaiti threatened to end his own life if the officers will not release him. He then kicked a lamp at the station and used a piece of the broken lamp to injure himself. He was taken to a nearby hospital.

Teenager stabbed: Police have taken into custody four juveniles for stabbing a 19-year-old Kuwaiti in the chest, reports Al-Rai daily. According to security sources, police acting on information rushed to the spot and found the victim in a pool of blood. The daily added, the juveniles tried in vain to escape when the police arrived. During interrogation they have admitted to the charge and said they stabbed their ‘friend’ over serious disagreements earlier over a certain issue. The suspects have been referred to the Juvenile Prosecution. The victim is reportedly fighting for his life.

Indian trio betrays trust: Police are looking for three Indians for betrayal of trust. The men are said to have disappeared with the sponsor’s fishing boat, fishing equipment and an undisclosed sum of money, reports Al-Rai daily. A security source said the Kuwaiti has filed a complaint with the Fahaheel Police Station and provided police information on the three men.

No place for beggars: Special duty police, in cooperation with female police officers, have arrested six women for begging for alms, reports Al-Rai daily. The daily added, the women were picked from markets and commercial complexes in Jahra. They have been handed over to the concerned authority to prepare their deportation from the country.

Fraudster arrested: Police have arrested a Kuwaiti who had been sentenced in absentia in connection with a KD 15,000 financial fraud, reports Al-Rai daily. The man was stopped in Farwaniya during a security check and as police checked his records on police computer, he reportedly took to his heels. Police chased and caught the man and handed him over to the Sentences Enforcement Department.

 Treasurer flees with cash: A Kuwaiti owner of car-wash station in Fahaheel has filed a complaint with the area police station accusing an Egyptian treasurer of betrayal of trust, reports Al-Anba daily. The daily added, the man reportedly left the country with KD 4,400.

Pharmacy vandalised: A Kuwaiti woman has filed a complaint with the Salmiya Police Station accusing an unidentified person of breaking into her pharmacy in the area and damaging the contents, reports Al-Rai daily. Personnel from the Criminal Evidences Department have lifted fingerprints to identify the culprit.
