KUWAIT CITY, Aug 24: The ministries of Interior and Trade Tuesday discussed a joint mechanism to regulate taxi fares and curb artificial fare increase, reports Al Rai daily.

The daily quoting sources said the meeting discussed law No. 79-10 that empowers the Ministry of Trade to regulate and monitor fares, besides activating the ministry’s monitoring role on taxi meters, indicating “there will be no more inactive meters after today”.

They added the new taxi fares are still under review after a special study conducted in that regard revealed that most taxis are fourcylinder and only KD 2.25 to KD 3 is spent for fuel, which is enough for a distance of 450 kms. Sources reiterated the ministry keenness to protect consumers from unjustified fare increase, saying they will be strict on monitoring the activities of taxis.
