‘Gaining Health & Combating Smoking …’ launched

KUWAIT CITY, April 6: The Cancer Awareness Nation (CAN) revealed that 25 percent of deaths in Kuwait annually are caused by smoking. This came in a press statement issued by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of CAN and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Society for the Control of Smoking and Cancer, Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh, on Wednesday, on the occasion of the inauguration of the “Gaining Health and Combating Smoking in Ramadan” program in Al-Surra Walkway, which was organized by CAN in cooperation with the Anti-Smoking Team and the Olympic Walking Committee.

Al-Saleh explained that there is a predictive research for all the Gulf countries about the financial burden of the harmful effects of smoking, in which data from the global burden of disease, which is equivalent to about one percent of the GDP of the Gulf countries, was used. He stressed the importance of adopting financially supported awareness programs and increasing the price of cigarettes by 50 percent to save more than a thousand people annually, while reducing the cost of spending on health by about 33 percent.

He stated that the most important means of prevention is to fight smoking, which causes about 80 percent of lung cancers and 60 percent of head and neck cancers. Al-Saleh said that the program “Gaining Health and Combating Smoking in Ramadan”, which continues until the 20th of Ramadan, aims to encourage smokers to stop this dangerous scourge and encourage them to practice walking. , (KUNA)
