KUWAIT CITY, Dec 20: Taking a break from the usual Friday dominated by rackets and shuttlecocks, Republika ng Sports sa Kuwait or RSK, holds yet another one-day competition at Kazma Sports Club in Adailiya, but this time not of badminton but of two other sports that the members are also passionate, and that is basketball and volleyball.

Conceptualized overall as a family day and sports fest combined, the day’s hectic itinerary includes not only the much-awaited basketball and volleyball games but also the parlor games for kids and parents. Members also chipped in for the potluck lunch that transformed the event into a fiesta-like atmosphere, added with the buntings, balloons, and other decorations that RSK’s event committee has very well prepared, including an event-tailored, techie and innovative photo booth named Myphotobox of couple Fjay and Leane Awa that members took turns for their best poses and smiles.

The event started on time and kicked off with the first game of scheduled basketball games, and was between red team and yellow team, with the red victorious over the yellow warriors after a hard-fought match that really started the adrenaline release for the day. The excitement continued on the 2nd game between blue team and white team, displaying some former basketball aficionados back in action after many years of absence in the sport. A crucial tit for tat, knee-jerking action was seen in the last minute with both teams not ready to give up, but game clock finally ended in favor of the blue team. The championship game between red team and blue team was even more exciting, and cheers and yells from the crowd add to the pressure on the players. Scores were deadlocked several times at the dying minute, plus a series of fouled out players from both teams brought a different level of heart-pumping game and cheer from the crowd, and finally ended with the red team clinching the championship title.

Alongside the basketball games, RSK Kids, as well as parents had extreme fun evident by their shriek and cheers in the parlor games prepared by VP Gwendolyn Tito and VP Grethel Marie Ramas, assisted by other RSK Officials. RSK Kids Club President Justine Franco also showed the crowd a sample of his talent to the tune of a modern dance craze.

At past noontime, after everyone had a hearty buffet lunch, and before starting on with the volleyball games, RSK Chairperson Felix Besanez introduced to the crowd event guests and supporters from Vista Land – Abe Malicdem and Erwin Piala, inviting everyone for Vista Land’s series of financial awareness seminars. Besanez also introduced Ahmed Younis, a guest from a local, Kuwait-based charity group that was inspired by RSK’s yellow boat outreach program and wanted to include said yellow boat program in their outreach activities. RSK Chairman also thanked the following patrons for their support, Shanker Lakhani of Mediacom Kuwait, Demos Arienda and BAP for providing accredited basketball referees, BDO for the shirts as give-away items for the day, and various RSK friends and members who helped in the preparations.

At around 2:00 pm, hard-slapping and spiking dominated the court as the volleyball games started, with the high jumping and hard-hitting men that left the crowd watch in admiration and awe of their hand prowess. After the elimination games of the men’s volleyball, the ladies’ volleyball kicked off, and this time the crown went wild, not because of a hardcore volleyball action but seeing players themselves having more laughter than hits on the ball, a game that was really more of fun than competition.
