Puskaraj and Petrache winners in Valentine’s Cup 2016 – Simundac, Ojha clinch award in Level B

KUWAIT CITY, March 17: Valentine’s Cup 2016 is over but it is a happy ending as a new batch of deserving players etched a mark of their achievement in the much loved game of badminton.

Puskaraj and Petrache won the Championship crown in the advance group against all odds. Truly the fun and laughter echoed through the walls of Al Nasser Sports Gym as the game and awards were given away at the end of the event.

The pairs who are 1st ranked were able to earn a spot in the semifinals and the 2nd ranked pairs earned the spot in the quarter-finals. The other players had to work their way and prove their worth through the double knockout game to earn the other spot.

Level A

Puskaraj and Anthony Petrache were the proclaimed champions in the Advance Category and were able to defend the crown against Mathew Jacob and Rhommel Torres 21-18, 21-19.

Henry Estrada and Ainur Duma Jul took home the 2nd runners-up title after they were beaten by Mathew and Rhommel in face off 16-21, 21-18, 14-21.

In the double knockout game Puskaraj and Anthony won against their opponent Nestor and Neilbert 21-15, 21-5 as well as team Victor and Noel 21-17, 21-18. Victor and Noel prevailed against Allan and Aleks 15-21, 21-16, 21-16 and triumphed over Gerry and Andrei 18-21, 21-18, 21-17 while they slammed Edison and Berlin 21-17, 21-19. Henry and Ainur outlasted Jess and Sameh 13-21, 21-14, 21-16 but were defeated by Puskaraj and Anthony 13-21, 14-21.

In the quarter-finals Puskaraj and Anthony clobbered Roy and Joel 21-6, 21-15 and in the semifinals they beat Mathew and Rhommel 21-8, 21-16 which assured them a spot on the finals.

Nestor and Neilbert smashed team Jess and Sameh 21-20, 21-17 and thumped Jerry and Andrei 21-20, 21-20. Meanwhile Allan and Aleks were ousted by Edison and Berlin 18-21, 21-16, 17-21.

Henry and Ainur got their winning struck by edging out against Edison and Berlin 20-21, 21-10, 21-20, slamming team Nestor and Neilbert 21-19, 21-14, pummeling Victor and Noel 21-13, 21-8 and thumping Roy and Joel 21-19, 21-19. However they were defeated by Mathew and Rhommel for the final match spot.

Higher Level B

In Higher Level B, top players were Nhoy Garcera and Eric Parcon they were able to hold their post and won against 1st runner-up holders Joel Lawagan and Addy Diaz during the final match 21-20, 21-14. Abdulrhaman Tarek and Bonnie Lazatin take home the 2nd runner-up title after losing their game to Joel and Addy 21-11, 14-21, 16-21.

In the double knockout game Romeo and Arnel slammed Cris and Fred 21-20, 21-11 and tamed Sripad and Rey 21-17, 21-20 however they were beaten by Joel and Addy 15-21, 9-21. Meanwhile Sripad and Rey thrashed Chato and Arjay 21-17, 21-20.

In the quarter-finals Tarek and Bonnie flattened Joel and Addy 21-18, 21-12 but in the semifinals they lost to Nhoy and Eric 17-21, 19-21. Chris and Fred defeated Chato and Arjay 11-21, 21-19, 21-19 but were thumped by Sripad and Rey 17-21, 16-21. Sripad and Rey also slammed Romeo T. and Arnel 21-5, 21-18 but were smashed by Joel and Addy 21-15, 19-21, 14-21 who defeated Tarek and Bonnie and moved on to the finals.

Lower Level B

In the Lower Level B the Raymond Simundac and Ambar Ojha took the Championship award by defeating Ano Borbe and Melissa Ramos 21-18, 21-15. Ano and Melissa defeated Romeo L. and Leo 21-10, 21-16 for the 2nd runner-up award.

In the double knockout game Pranab and Abby slammed Majeed and Gomer 21-13, 21-18, Rami and Ariel prevailed over Aqueeleno and Glaiza 13-21, 21-20, 21-13. Ano and Melissa won against Albert and Andy 21-20, 21-19, edge Pranab and Abby 21-17, 19-21, 21-15 but lost to Romeo L. and Leo 21-16, 17-21, 14-21. Romeo L. and Leo outclassed Lukman and Brent 21-15, 21-20, 21-19 and slammed Rami and Ariel 21-15, 21-17.

Moving to the quarter-finals, Romeo L. and Leo smashed Manik and Glen 21-13, 21-16 but in the semifinals they lost to Raymond and Ambar who moved on to the finals 19-21, 20-21. Ano and Melissa move on to the finals by defeating Pranab and Abby 21-17, 21-14, outlasting Manik and Glen 19-21, 21-18, 21-17 and defeating Romeo L. and Leo.

Level C

The Champions in Level C were Eugene Ultra and Liza Delos Pobres who defeated Gerald Makig Angay and Jory Bantug in a tight battle 21-20, 21-20. Arfit and JC took home the 2nd runner-up title.

During the double knock out game Liza and Eugene thumped Chito and Julieanne 21-18, 21-12 but lost to Joan and Joy 16-21, 21-17, 16-21. Gerald and Jory slammed Reem and Jaime 21-15, 21-20, tamed Joan and Joy 21-18, 21-18 on the quarter-finals defeated Amor L. and Susan 21-13, 21-16. In the semifinals Gerald and Jory thrashed Arfit and JC 21-11, 21-18 on their way to the finals.

Liza and Eugene worked their way to the finals by taming Sarah and Sally 21-8, 21-18, smashing Chito and Julieanne 21-17, 21-12, thumping Amor A. and Susan 21-13, 21-15 and battling against Arfit and JC 21-14, 21-13.

Level D

In the Level D Category the players who took home the Championship Award is Mishal Khaldy and Virgie Dalagan who defeated Juzziel Magno and Remy Larano 21-14, 19-21, 21-19. Marju Arevalo and Ross Laguardia were the 2nd runner-up by beating Juzziel and Remy 7-21, 8-21.

During the double knockout game Juzziel and Remy slammed Kingsheen and Rizza 21-12, 21-11 but lost to Mishal and Virgie 21-19, 15-21, 18-21 who also beat Mishari and Lilibeth 20-21, 21-10, 21-12.

In the quarter-finals Mishal and Vergie tamed Krista and Paul 21-9, 21-10 and in the semifinals they defeated Marju and Ross 21-8, 21-12 for a spot in the finals. Juzziel and Remy moved to the finals by slamming Mishari and Lilibeth 21-7, 21-7, thumping Krista and Paul 21-12, 21-14 and facing Marju and Ross.

This tournament was a result of extraordinary efforts and support of the Filipino Badminton Club in Kuwait (FILBACK) headed by their overall Director Noel Candolesas and tournament directors Nato Calanog and Alex Hernandez along with their officers and members.
