KUWAIT CITY, Oct 20: MP Saleh Ashour has called for the privatization of sports clubs and application of the ‘one man-one vote’ system in the clubs elections. In a press statement, he stressed that the source of the sports crisis in Kuwait is from within the country and not outside by either International Olympic Committee or International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA).

Insisting that, “It is time we put an end to the sports crisis in our country”, Ashour explained that the source of the crisis is inherent in Kuwait and is due to the lack of confidence and cooperation among the sports parties, which prompted international intervention to suspend sports activity in Kuwait.

After conducting a thorough study, he believes the solution can be implemented by the sports clubs themselves after they enjoy complete independence with continued financial and moral support from the government for the development of sports in the country.

He affirmed that the independence of sports sector in Kuwait can be achieved through the following key points: n Amending the election law of sports clubs on the basis of one vote per member of the general assembly.

■ Privatization of some clubs as per the law

■ Continuation of governmental support for sports and youth and accepting them as one of the national responsibilities incumbent upon the state for taking care of the youth

■ Preventing sports clubs from political interference and personal interests in the sports field.

In another development, MP Yousef Al-Zalzalah clarified the report of the Parliament’s investigation committee on the contract of Kuwait Airways Corporation (KAC) with a company for the project of Integrated Automated Systems Development. He urged Minister of Communications and State Minister for Municipal Affairs Essa Al-Kandari to ether dismiss KAC’s Board of Directors and refer all those involved to the Public Prosecution or stand on the podium to face interpellation in this regard.

Al-Zalzalah explained that the investigation committee has discovered many legal, financial and technical irregularities in the contract, the details of which were derived from the documents and statements obtained from those responsible for the contract.

He revealed that the committee detailed these irregularities and indicated that the justifications of KAC were weak and inconsistent and that not one of those justifications could be considered as acceptable. Al-Zalzalah said, “If the members of this investigation committee are from the Kuwait University, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Justice and if the committee is chaired by the Fatwa and Legislation Department, this means the government has affirmed the existence of these deliberate violations, which in turn implies the presence of suspicions of corruption.

Therefore, Minister of Communications has only two options — the first is to dismiss KAC’s Board of Directors and refer all those who are involved to the Public Prosecution. The second option is to stand on the podium and face interpellation to elaborate this
