KUWAIT CITY, Sept 15: Lawmakers expect changes in the political scene by the end of the legislative term due to the alleged uncooperative attitude of the government in taking decisions, citing as an example the fuel price hike.

They also asked the government to implement all the laws ratified by the Parliament before the legislative term ends. MP Ahmad Lari said the political landscape will be affected but not to the point of destruction, indicating some priorities will be delayed. He affirmed the Parliament is keen on addressing all items in its agenda and the reports of various committees.

He explained the current financial situation and higher oil prices had an impact on the budget; hence, the need for laws and procedures which serve the interests of citizens. He added the government carries the biggest burden so it should have the correct roadmap.

He also stressed the need for the executive authority to be ready for the next stage, find appropriate solutions to economic problems and diversify sources of national income.

Furthermore, MP Ahmed Al-Qudaibi described the current political scene as vague because of the political changes occurring every day. He stressed this necessitates responsible parliamentary work which understands the importance of the next phase and how to deal with the changes.

He added the parliamentary changes should be consistent with the priorities of the Parliament and everything on the table of discussion which requires approval. He cited the bill on the autonomy of the judiciary and proposals submitted to the Interior and Defense Committee regarding the parliamentary election system.

He unveiled his plan to push for approval of his proposal on the parliamentary election — the list quota system which aims to make parliamentary work clear and transparent. He explained that through the quota system, each list will be required to present their action plan to the voters so the latter can hold the list accountable in case of failure to implement the plan. MP Abdullah Al-Mayouf stressed the Parliament will continue to present proposals and issue legislation in the interest of citizens. He added every MP has the right to submit proposals; including those related to finances such as salary increase, allowances or bonuses.

He strongly opposed the fuel price hike while suggesting that financial support must be granted to citizens and the government should adjust the prices. He believes the political landscape will change, even the priorities of MPs, and there will be confrontation between the parliamentarians and the government due to the unstudied decisions of the latter. He disclosed his top priority is the implementation of laws ratified by the Parliament, asserting the legislature will see to it that this is done before the end of its term.
