KUWAIT CITY, Jan 21: The General Traffic Department will be using advanced electronic devices to issue and renew driving licences of Kuwaitis online in all the six governorates, reports Al-Anba daily quoting Interior Ministry sources.
The same sources said a number of employees are being trained in this regard how to go about the new system and issue and renew the licences electronically. The sources pointed out the GTD in two months will embark on the project to renew and issue driving licences to Kuwaitis only.
However, the expatriates are expected to be included in the project in the near future.
The sources pointed out the Interior ministry will create an electronic window to receive the transactions which will be checked by the employees and the applicant will have to collect the license from a device. The procedure is similar to what is being done by the Public Authority for Civil Information when issuing or renewing the Civil ID.
The sources said Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Lt-Gen Sheikh Khalid Al-Jarrah is personally involved in the success of the project within the ministry’s framework to get rid of paper transactions.
Earlier, the Ministry of Interior signed a contract with a Polish company which specializes in the issuance of smart driving licences as part of a project to issue and renew driving licences through smart mobile phones and the Kiosk system in order to ease traffic congestion and facilitate services to citizens and residents.
The company, certified by ISO, was contracted by the Interior ministry to complete this project and operate it according to the latest international specifications in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
