KUWAIT CITY, Feb 28: Official spokesperson of the Social Affairs and Labor Ministry and head of its Public Relations Department Afifa Akbar has vehemently denied the alleged suspension of the payment of allowances for some orphans, reports Al-Anba daily. Akbar explained the Family Nursery Department and Support Committee merely applied the law that prohibits disbursement of financial support twice to the same beneficiary. She said the decision applies to only 25 out of more than a hundred orphans; including those studying abroad whose expenses are shouldered by a charity or the Higher Education Ministry, those who receive allowances from certain authorities and those staying in welfare homes. She affirmed the committee meets weekly to study and scrutinize each file.

In another development, sources disclosed the ministry has forwarded a letter to its finance counterpart requesting for an increase in the budget allocated for maintenance works in the Social Care Sector. Sources clarified this will prevent the disruption of maintenance works just because the budget allotted for this purpose has been used up and the tender in this regard is now in the hands of the Central Tenders Committee (CTC).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor has asked its finance counterpart to pay the excellent job performance allowance to all eligible staff immediately, reports Al-Anba daily quoting Undersecretary Matar Al-Mutairi. Speaking on the sidelines of the theatrical show organized by the Informative Activities Department in the Social Care Sector on the occasion of the national days, Al-Mutairi confirmed the ministry filled a number of vacancies in the sector last year. He said this is in addition to the renovation of the shelter and service buildings, as well as the issuance of bylaws for all departments.
