MP Hamdan warns govt against signing airport project contract

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 25: MP Azmi Hamdan has warned the government against signing a contract to implement the airport project, which might lead to the worst embezzlement case in the history of the authority. He claimed some companies have committed violations and have become influential in certain government institutions like the ministries of Public Works and Health. He said mistakes and corruption are rampant in certain ministries which are considered “dark dots” in the current government. He wonders if the government is aware of the dire consequences of signing a contract with a company whose offer exceeds the budget by 39 percent while it failed to follow the technical and financial conditions. He called for the immediate intervention of HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah to postpone the implementation of the project until all the controversies are cleared.

Meanwhile, the Interior and Defense Committee discussed Wednesday the naturalization file, governmental draft laws and parliamentary proposals. Committee Chairman MP Sultan Al-Ghosaim disclosed they will meet Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khalid and Chairperson of the Central System for Remedying the Status of Illegal Residents (CSRSIR) Saleh al-Fadallah within two weeks to discuss the naturalization file.

In another development, MP Dr Abdullah Al-Turaiji asked Minister of Communications and State Minister for Municipal Affairs Issa Al-Kandari to cancel the decision on transferring dozens of Kuwaiti employees from Kuwait Airways Corporation (KAC) to other government agencies. He argued it is not beneficial for both the employees and their workplaces if they are forced to transfer to another institution.

He pointed out the employees expressed their wish to transfer to other government agencies before the cancellation of the privatization of the corporation as they felt there was no job security in the private sector at the time due to the unjust layoffs among Kuwaitis employed in private companies. He said, “Now the KAC employees want to continue working in the corporation so we are hoping for the suspension of the implementation of the transfer decision until the National Assembly finalizes discussion on the proposed amendments to the KAC Law.”
