KUWAIT CITY, Aug 13: Assistant Undersecretary for Criminal Security Affairs at Ministry of Interior Major General Abdulhameed Al-Awadhi affirmed that the recent successes recorded by the Drug Control General Department were achieved due to the direct support and close follow-up by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khalid Al-Sabah and the Undersecretary Lieutenant General Sulaiman Fahad Al-Fahad.

In a press release issued by Ministry of Interior, Major General Al-Awadhi declared that both senior officials have assured the provision of advanced technology and training programs that can boost the morale, alertness and ability of the officers to confront drug barons. He explained that the department seized about 20 million illicit narcotic pills, almost 420 kilograms of hashish and large quantities of other intoxicants in the last eight months.

A total of 1,031 drug-related cases were filed, 1,374 incidents were referred to various concerned authorities for legal procedures and 235 expatriates were deported during this period. Major General Al-Awadhi said the onthe- spot assessment of recent confiscations by Minister of Interior Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khalid Al-Sabah was a sign of his strong commitment to the activities of the sector and the need to handle with iron hands the unscrupulous elements that plan to harm safety and security of the country.

He stressed that the current state of insecurity in the region largely contributes to the rise in the rate at which some people are trying to smuggle illicit drugs into Kuwait and other parts of the Arabian Gulf region. Major General Al-Awadhi indicated that the Arabian Gulf region remains a major target of international drug cartels for their nefarious activities of smuggling drugs within the region, affirming that the department will live up to the expectation and give them a good fight to stop the menace by blocking their local and foreign sources in coordination with the concerned authorities in the GCC countries to trail those criminals.

He stressed that the department has been doing its best and exerting tremendous efforts to carry out many arrests and tighten up the security loopholes as well as launch awareness campaigns aimed to protect the youth and society.
