Minister vows strict action against fake degree holders – Kuwait-Iran University rumours rejected

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 8: Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Bader Al-Essa has affirmed that strict measures will be taken against professors who obtained degrees from unrecognized universities or those who presented fake academic certificates, reports Al- Jarida daily.

In a press statement, Al-Essa announced the formation of a committee headed by Dr Ahmad Bishara to follow up the issue. He said the committee has started working and it will present a report including details on the results of its work to determine the universities which issued unaccredited certificates. He added the committee will work for three months starting from the date of its first meeting, warning the law will be applied on everyone. Al-Essa asserted the ministry is keen on addressing the issue and there will be a meeting with the concerned authorities to identify the procedures which should be taken regarding these certificates.

Meanwhile, Dr Bader Al-Essa refuted rumors on establishing a joint Kuwaiti-Iranian university. These rumors are “utterly untrue,” the minister told KUNA on Sunday. He clarified that his meeting with Iranian Minister of Science, Research and Technology Mohammad Farhadi did not discuss the establishment of a joint university.

He added that his meeting with his Iranian counterpart took place on the fringes of the UNESCO’s 38th General Conference. The Ministry of Education will continue implementing the old mechanism for the evaluation of Grade One students as it has decided to postpone the application of the new mechanism until next year for further study, reports Al-Jarida daily quoting sources. Sources confirmed the new mechanism has been submitted to the World Bank to study it, so instead of delaying the evaluation process for the first term, the application of the new mechanism will be postponed until next year.

Sources said the ministry will issue a circular to all concerned schools next week to apply the old mechanism without waiting for the new one. On the other hand, sources said the ministry is preparing a big marketing plan for its educational projects, clarifying that the plan will focus on all aspects. Sources affirmed Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Bader Al-Essa recognizes the importance of media and marketing in the works of the ministry, especially within the perspective of adopting the principle of transparency regarding the improvement of the educational sector. In another development, the standard of student elections has deteriorated and is marred with tribalism, says former Coordinator of Democratic Wasat List and Secretary-General of the former students force Ali Khaja, says Al-Seyassah. In an interview recently, Khaja described the work of students’ lists as tribal, not academic. He cited as an example the procedures followed by the coalition and its Islamic counterpart, claiming the two lists have adopted sectarian ideologies.
