Lawmaker proposes bicycle lanes

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 16: MP Osama Al-Shaheen has submitted a proposal for the Public Authority for Roads and Transportation (PART) to construct bicycle lanes along Arabian Gulf Street and other suitable roads around the country.

He suggested that the bicycle lanes should not be less than two meters wide and they should be constructed in accordance with all safety standards. He explained the number of cyclists in the country is on the rise, especially during winter and holidays.

Since their preferred cycling track is along the beach which is usually crowded with families, children and joggers; it has become necessary for the State to allocate spaces for cyclists, he concluded.

Meanwhile, the migration of Kuwaiti intellectuals due to what they described as laws restraining freedom of speech remains a muffled controversy; prompting MP Saleh Ashour to call for cancellation, or at least, amendment of the Electronic Crimes Law.

He argued this law might have been beneficial at some point but it is now contributing to the loss of young Kuwaiti intellectuals, pioneering doctors, engineers and pilots. Therefore, it is now time to cancel such laws for Kuwait to be a country of intellectual pluralism and true freedom of speech, he asserted.

In another development, MP Humoud Al-Khothair urged the government to suspend any action related to merging the Manpower and Government Restructuring Program (MGRP) and Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) until the National Assembly discusses the concerned parliamentary committee’s report in this regard.

He reminded the government that State Ministry for Cabinet Affairs Anas Al- Saleh promised to suspend such action in the last legislative term, hoping the minister fulfills his promise considering the concerned committee is currently working on its report which will be prioritized by the Assembly. He added that although the report concludes with rejecting the merger, it also highlights positive outcomes like several additional benefits for employees in PAM and cancellation of the governmental decree obligating Kuwaitis employed in the private sector to submit a work permit.
