TUNIS, May 18, (KUNA): The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) concluded the 23rd session of its general conference on Tuesday with renewing the mandate of Dr Abdullah Mohareb, Kuwait, as director general for a second four-year term in office. Dr Mohareb thanked the Arab ministers of education for their renewed confidence in him and promised to continue working for upgrading the role of the organization.

“ALECSO materializes the undertaking of the Arab countries to working together for improving the educational process, and promoting the reforms in the areas of scientific research and the cultural movement in the Arab world.

“It has entered a new stage in shouldering its responsibility for helping the Arab countries in these areas through its ambitious plan for future joint action,” he said.

The general conference of the organization has adopted a plan for promoting the educational process in the Arab countries which face economic difficulties such as Somalia, Comoros and Djibouti in 2017-2018.

Meanwhile, the ALECSO strongly denounced the acts of vandalization that targeted several museums in some Arab countries that face exceptional security situations.

In a statement, released on the eve of the International Museums Day (IMD), the organization called for more concerted action by the Arab countries and the international community to protect the museums in the Arab region.

The statement urged the competent regional and international organizations, particularly the UNESCO, to shoulder their responsibility for keeping the sites of cultural heritage away from conflicts pursuant to The Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict with Regulations for the Execution of the Convention 1954.

The IMD has been celebrated on May 18 since 1977.

Kuwait delegation to the 23rd ALECSO general conference was led by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education Dr Haytham Al-Athari.
