Al-Hammad bags Saudi’s 1st gold in GCC fencing event

Winners celebrate on the podium during the 6th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Women’s Games in Kuwait City.

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 22, (Agencies): Kuwait’s Reem Al-Shatti won the gold medal in the fencing competition, as part of the sixth edition of the Gulf Women Sports Tournament, which is being held in Kuwait until Oct 30.

In the same competition, the UAE’s Al-Anoud Al-Saadi won the silver medal, while Qatar’s Wadha Al-Abdullah and the Emirati Aisha Eid shared the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Saudi fencer Hasna Al-Hammad bagged the first Saudi medal, a gold, on the second day of the 6th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Women’s Games.

She won the gold medal in Individual Sabre event after beating her UAE opponent Shahd Khuram with a final score of 15-6 points.

Princess Nouf Bint Khalid, head of the Saudi delegation participating in the tournament, said what Hasna achieved shows that Saudi sports stars are able to climb the podiums, and will achieve more medals in the coming days of the tournament.

In basketball, the UAE defeated Oman 63-22 while Bahrain defeated Kuwait 50-39. Meanwhile, Qatar defeated Kuwait 38-12 in handball.

The tournament witnessed the participation of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman competing in handball, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, taekwondo, archery, bowling, fencing and athletics.
