KUWAIT CITY, July 29: Head of the Airport Food Import Section affiliated to the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition Eng. Nawaf Fahad Al-Azmi revealed that the number of food shipments that arrive through the airport ranges between 35,000 and 37,000 shipments per year at a rate of 250 to 300 shipments per day, reports Al- Anba daily. In an exclusive interview with the daily, he said, “Each shipment has between 500 kilograms and 15 to 20 tons of various food items including fruits, meat, fish and others. In addition to these shipments, there are also some food items brought into Kuwait by travelers for their personal use. It is necessary to analyze them because we do not know the content of the food items they bring. We inspect, test and evaluate them to check if they are for commercial or personal use.

“All the rules and requirements for the work focus on the list of imported food that cover all needs. There are no regulations that need updating, but the current regulation covers all needs. An accurate description of the food items must be included in an integrated manner, in addition to the GSO9 regulation. This regulation entails a list of technical specifications of the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition, which is recognized throughout the Gulf, and covers all food items and defines the ways to verify them. Also the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issues daily circulars based on its follow-up to all countries of the world and bans some food items from countries that are infested with some diseases.” The interview also touched on a number of procedures and tasks taken by the department to ensure the safety of food shipments
