Riders take to the road for charity.

CYCLES OF LIFE

BIKERS RIDE FOR CHARITY

The Kuwaiti edition of the Global Biking Initiative saw a swarm of enthusiastic cyclists come out in support of various charities on March 14-16. 85 cyclists from eight countries took part in the three-day event to raise awareness and support humanitarian organizations.

The Global Biking Initiative is a worldwide cycling community first established in Germany in 2008 that exerts its efforts to engage people to greater social responsibly through the medium of sport. Multiple cycling events take place during the year, of which the main event is the GBI Europe Tour, attended by several hundred participants from all over the world. Kuwait became the first Gulf State to ever host the event.

The theme for the ride was ‘We Cycle for a Reason’, and participants were grouped in teams from Egypt, KSA, Oman, Jordan, Qatar, Britain, India and Kuwait. The participants in Kuwait used their pedal power to traverse the distance of 350 kms across Kuwait the Free Trade Zone towards Kuwait City, cycling along Kuwait’s enchanting desert as well as the scenic coastline of the Ahmadi Oil District to end their long arduous journey at Mangaf.

Apart from the obvious adrenaline rush that comes with a new challenge, cyclists in Kuwait got the opportunity to experience the country in a new way while also doing good through a memorable endeavor. A number of causes were supported during the event.

Friends and family of the late entrepreneur and activist Ahmed Al-Gharabally, supported the event in his honor to raise awareness for the cause of child labor, child trafficking and child abuse. Gharabally, a young and beloved advocate for change, who had supported various local social initiatives passed away in 2017, but left behind a legacy of compassion for others to follow.

“We, the friends and family of Ahmed, want to keep his legacy alive. My son was a great giver, a humanitarian, and very active in the community. All of his efforts exemplified his principles. He strongly believed in equality and no discrimination on the basis of gender, race, age, etc. He volunteered with numerous social organizations and campaigns in Kuwait. One of the most visible campaigns he’d initiated was bringing attention to the cleaners in Kuwait in order to garner greater respect for the work they do”, Ninon Al-Gharabally told the Arab Times.

“After his passing two years ago, I received messages from all those people whose lives he had touched, from different corners of this world. I was very happy to see the team of cyclists who rode in his name at the GBI event. They were made up of friends and family of Ahmed from Kuwait and abroad. My son’s only interest in life was helping people. While we navigate our great loss of him, it is important that we all continue in his steps and engage with our communities and better our societies”, she added.

The Global Bike Initiative, since 2008, has counted participation from over 2,000 cyclists in its events, crossing sixteen countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, and has raised more than 1.1 million euros for charities in twenty-three countries.
