Gulf security, stability tops Kuwait-UK panel meeting

LONDON, June 25, (KUNA): London will host on Tuesday the joint UK-Kuwaiti Steering Group’s 12th meeting, with security and stability of the Gulf region and other regional files topping the agenda. The Kuwaiti delegation will be led by Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah, while the UK delegation will be led by British State Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Alistair Burt, said the dean of the diplomatic corps and Kuwait’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom Khalid Al-Duwaisan.

He highlighted, in statements to KUNA, the important role played by the committee to support bilateral relation and contribution in solving issues that concern both peoples. Moreover, Ambassador Al-Duwaisan voiced satisfaction over the UK government in facilitating the process of acquiring a visa online for Kuwaiti citizens wishing to visit the UK. “Britain is one of Kuwait’s oldest allies,” he noted, pointing out that bilateral meetings is a great opportunity to look into regional crises and finding durable solutions. He pointed out that the 12th meeting for the joint group will primarily look into strengthening defense cooperation and finding durable solution to increase trade and investments. Internationally, the committee will mull over the Gulf crisis, developments in the Iranian nuclear file and the situations in Syria and Yemen.

On his part, UK Ambassador to Kuwait Michael Davenport told KUNA that his country is looking forward to strengthen ties with Kuwait on economic and commercial levels, especially after Brexit. “Kuwait is a significant investor in UK. As London is still the headquarters of the ‘Kuwait Investment Office’ for 65 years now.” Trade volume between the two countries currently stands at $3.9 billion and in the rise, while British exports to Kuwait rose by 23 percent, Davenport noted.
