KUWAIT CITY, June 1: Head of Kuwait Fishermen Society Dhaher Al-Suwayan disclosed that fishing stromateus fish in Kuwait’s territorial waters will be banned from Saturday, June 1 to July 15. In a press release, he urged all fishermen to abide by the decisions of Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR).
Al-Suwayan called upon the relevant authorities to support the society such as by providing a suitable infrastructure for an alternative bay instead of the Al-Shamlan Bay based on the decision of the Services Committee of the Council of Ministers.
He explained that Kuwait has been enforcing the ban on fishing certain types of fish in the last 22 years but it has been noticed that the fish production is not higher after the period of the ban ends. This is because the neighboring countries do not enforce a similar ban.
Al-Suwayan indicated that the Kuwaiti markets receive tons of exported fish during the period of ban, which negatively affects the objective behind the ban to enhancing the stock of fish in the sea. He called upon the relevant authorities to study this issue and find necessary solutions.
