‘Extreme daytime heat keeps away mourners’

KUWAIT CITY, June 13: In response to the request of citizens to the concerned authorities in the Kuwait Municipality to set evening timings for the funeral processions in light of the rise in temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius in some areas, the Director of the Funeral Affairs Department Dr. Faisal Al-Awadi affirmed that burial procession at night is available on all days of the year, not only in the summer, reports Al-Rai daily.

Citizens had complained through the daily that the families of the deceased and their families, mourners and workers in the cemeteries suffer from extreme heat during the funeral and burial procedures during the day time both before noon and in the afternoon, which may expose them to the risk of heat stroke, and push many not to participate in the funeral ceremonies. They explained that many citizens and residents are keen to go to the cemeteries to participate in the funeral and burial of the dead for good deeds.

The burial ceremonies are usually after the afternoon prayer or sometimes after the evening prayer, but these people find themselves facing the problem of the high temperature, which may make them hesitant to go to the cemetery, and they would instead only go to diwaniyas to offer condolences. The citizens stressed that this matter should be taken into account by the municipality, and the timing of the burial should be changed to the evening period to facilitate people and relieve them from the intense heat, especially since they are still in the beginning of the summer, and it will be hotter in July and August.

They indicated that the municipality, in the previous years, used to set nightly timings during the summer, and they hope that it will do so this year as well, so that people will not be discouraged from participating in funerals, standing at the graves, waiting there and praying for the dead, because of the severe heat. After conveying the citizens’ complaint to those concerned in the municipality, the Director of the Funeral Affairs Department Dr. Faisal Al-Awadi said, “The doors of the department are open around the clock in all cemeteries, both in the summer season and otherwise. The burial of the dead during the evening period is available”. He stressed all equipment to deal with the summer period and high temperatures are available in the cemeteries, starting with air conditioning in the halls, fans, umbrellas, and cold water, adding that the department has taken all necessary measures to facilitate the funerals for the families and mourners of the deceased
