KUWAIT CITY, Nov 24: Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs Major General Jamal Al-Sayegh has requested senior officials at the Vehicle Licensing Section to review an integrated study about linking the expiry date of a driving license issued for an expatriate with the validity of his residency, reports Al-Jarida daily.

The daily quoting a reliable source from the General Traffic Department pointed out that Major General Al-Sayegh has been notified more than once about the level of congestion witnessed at the traffic departments in all six governorates of Kuwait due to the annual renewal of expatriates’ driving licenses as per the current regulation, stressing the need to find lasting solution to the issue by amending the current law in that concern.

He added that senior traffic officials have also recommended the validity of driving license should be five years, and if the expatriate’s residency expires before expiration of the driving license, it will be cancelled automatically.

He explained the idea ensures that traffic violations are settled to prevent accumulation of fines since an expatriate will not be able to renew his residency unless he pays the fine for traffic violations committed, noting this provision is already in force
