KUWAIT CITY, Jan 22: The demand for traditional or Islamic medicine services is increasing on a daily basis, according to indicators of the World Health Organization. This is because of its therapeutic safety, as it depends on the natural herbs described in the traditional medical heritage, and its combination with modern medicine, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Since the establishment of the Islamic Medicine Center in Kuwait 36 years ago, about 23,000 citizens and residents have visited the center to receive treatment for their pain with dozens of natural herbal medicines that cover many common and chronic diseases.

Director of the center Dr. Manal Al-Matar explained that the center seeks to keep up with the medicinal and cognitive needs of its clients, and introduce other types of complementary medicine, such as cupping. The outpatient clinics of the center receive patients who were referred from clinics and health centers. Patients can also visit the center directly depending on the diseases for which treatments are available.

When a patient visits the center, a file is first opened for the patient, his medical history is recorded, he is clinically examined, and his laboratory and radiological examinations are reviewed, or new tests are requested to reach an accurate diagnosis of his condition.

The center’s services are recognized locally and regionally, and are witnessing remarkable development.

Regarding the latest developments in the work of the center, Dr. Al-Matar revealed that the cupping clinic was opened in October last year, and receives about 10 to 15 visitors daily, adding that the center receives more than 50 citizens and residents daily.

She highlighted the keenness of the center’s doctors to know the types of medicines that patients take in order to avoid any side effects that may result when adding herbal supplements, while stressing the importance of the patient continuing to take his usual medications from outside the center.

Dr. Al-Matar said, “There are currently six clinics in the center, and there is a plan to increase the number of these clinics in the future, as new specialties have been introduced, including cupping.

The center has a medicine factory, which worked during the previous years to manufacture many types of natural plant-based pharmaceutical ingredients free of industrial chemicals, based on the principle of natural herbal medicine, taking into account the ease of use, taste and smell during production, confirming reliance on grinding and mixing devices, and making capsules.

The medicine laboratory at the center has been carrying out studies on all plants received by the center, both externally and microscopically using the latest equipment to ensure that they are used in the best ways and in accordance with the medical recommendations.”

Dr. Al-Matar explained that the treatment prescribed differs depending on the type of disease. Not all diseases can be treated with herbal medicine or alternative medicine. Some diseases require certain medications or surgeries that may not be available in the Islamic Medicine Center. Some of the medicinal herbs used are imported from India and Pakistan, and a few from within the country.

Number of visitors to the center
• 3,956 visitors in 2021, including 2,717 citizens.
• 2,886 patients were admitted in 2020, including 785 residents.
• 5,282 visitors to the center in 2019, including 3,864 citizens.
• 4,034 patients were admitted in 2018, including 1,069 residents.
• 6,762 visitors to the center in 2017, including 3,318 citizens.

The Islamic Medicine Center is located in the Sabah Health Zone. It is a medical, religious and architectural edifice that captivates the mind. It was opened in 1987 in the presence of His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad, and it was built at the expense of the late Khaled Yousef Al-Marzouq.
