Cut ‘Qiyam’ prayer duration – ‘Men only in mosques’

KUWAIT CITY, May 1: The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has released a circular regarding the “Night prayer” (Qiyam) in mosques during the last ten days of the month of Ramadan, reports Al-Qabas daily. As per the circular, men are allowed to perform the prayers in mosques but the duration will be reduced as much as possible to make it within 30 minutes. It is prohibited to hold such prayers in high-density areas such as Hawally, Nugra, Maidan Hawally, Salmiya, Jleeb Al- Shuyoukh and Mahboula.

The points highlighted in the circular are the following:
1- Allow men to perform Qiyam prayer in mosques and reduce its length as possible to make it within 30 minutes, while adhering to the health requirements currently in force in mosques.
2- Not allow the Qiyam prayer to be held in the following high-density areas – Hawally, Nugra, Maidan Hawally, Salmiya, Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh and Mahboula.
3- The Qiyam prayer should begin after 12:00 midnight.
4- The Qiyam prayer should be held in all the mosques where Taraweeh prayers are held, except for the mosques in the aforementioned areas.
5- Continue to perform Taraweeh prayers in mosques for men, immediately after the Isha prayer, for a period of only 15 minutes, while adhering to the health requirements currently in force in mosques.
6- Continue to close mosques after each prayer and prohibit vigil (i’tikaaf) and holding of lectures, lessons and other activities.
7- Attendance in mosques is restricted to men only. Women and children are not allowed.
8- Commit to wearing masks, using personal mats, and physical separation among worshippers.
9- Continue to prohibit Iftar and Suhoor tables in mosques.
10- Urge those who have not received the COVID-19 vaccine to perform prayers at home.
11- The elderly, people with chronic diseases, and immunocompromised people are recommended to perform the Qiyam prayer in their homes.
12- Maintain general cleanliness inside the mosque and corridors, and periodically clean and wipe surfaces that are frequently touched after each prayer.
