KUWAIT CITY, June 29: The Foodstuffs and Monitoring Committee, affiliated to the Auditing Department of Kuwait Municipality- Capital Governorate branch, launched an inspection campaign covering several areas of the governorate that included butcheries, markets and cooperative societies, in coordination with the Public Relations Department.

In a press statement, the department disclosed the campaign commenced at 9:00 pm and concluded by midnight, resulting in the issuance of 35 citations for different violations such as selling foodstuffs without obtaining health certificates, operating restaurants and cafés without a health license, employing staff before obtaining health certificates, as well as failure to comply with sanitary regulations and selling harmful goods.

Four shops were found to have committed grave violations and notices were issued to close them, in addition to the confiscation of 20 kilograms of expired foodstuffs. Director of the branch Eng Amar Al- Amar asserted this campaign comes within the framework of the ‘Your Health Matters’ campaign and in compliance with the instructions of Municipality Director General Eng Ahmad Al-Manfouhi to intensify inspections in cooperative societies, restaurants, shops and meat markets to ensure the safety of food items sold to the public.

On the other hand, Head of Municipality Services Auditing and Follow-up Eman Al-Kandari affirmed that the aim of the campaign was to verify the suitability of foodstuffs and level of commitment of the staff in foodstuff outlets to obtain health certificates in order to guarantee the quality and safety of foodstuffs provided to the public. Al-Kandari added that shop owners are required to comply with general regulations governing commercial and industrial establishments.

Meanwhile, during a three-hour field campaign launched by the emergency team of the Mubarak Al-Kabir governorate Municipality branch against shops, cooperative societies and central markets in several areas of the governorate, members of the teams have confiscated one ton of foodstuffs unsuitable for human consumption and shut down a store for not abiding by hygiene rules, reports Al-Anba daily. The daily did not give more details.
