Call to extend ban on fruits, vegetables from Egypt for 3 months

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 22: Public Authority for Food and Nutrition (PAFN) has recommended extension of the period of strict control on consignments of fruits and vegetables coming from Egypt for additional three months starting from Jan 25.

In a press release, secretary of the higher council of PAFN Engineer Adel Al-Suweit stated the recommendation entails quarantine of all fruits and vegetables coming from Egypt, followed by referral of samples of each consignment to government labs for testing to ensure the product is of the required standard and fit for human consumption.

He added the recommendation also indicates listing the names of all companies that import similar consignments in order to undergo similar necessary measures and ensure all consignments have health certificates from the country of origin, in addition to analysis certificates of harmful pesticides for fruits and vegetables entering the country.

He reiterated the step taken by the authority was prompted by reports of reemergence of pesticides on agricultural produce from Egypt, especially the fruits and vegetables.
