KUWAIT CITY, Oct 27: A number of speakers in the forum titled ‘Gains of Boycotting … Parliamentary and Governmental Corruption’ affirmed that the flaws in the parliamentary and governmental performances were exposed due to their decision to boycott the elections, reports Al-Rai daily.

Former MP and a candidate from the First Constituency Dr Adel Al- Damkhi revealed that the initiative for reconciliation, which included participation in the elections based on the ‘one-man one-vote’ system, came under the condition of receiving general amnesty for all the cases.

He said the initiative was made following the Cabinet session on the near transformation of Kuwait into a police state through actions like withdrawing of citizenships and arresting opposition members as a tool for defeating the opposition.

Dr Al-Damkhi affirmed that the decision to boycott the last elections was right, especially since the participation rate in those elections was less than 39 percent.

Meanwhile, former MP and a candidate from the Fifth Constituency Nayef Al-Medras said the move to boycott the last elections exposed the ugly faces of the parliament and the government, insisting that the 2009 parliament had provoked crises and the last parliament was clearly pro-government.

Elections
Furthermore, former MP and a candidate from the Fifth Constituency Bader Al-Dahoum said the decision to boycott last elections was right at that time, revealing that even though they have changed their mind and decided to participate in the upcoming elections, they are still against the ‘oneman one-vote’ system. He insisted that the decisions taken during the last parliamentary term were the worst including the decision to revoke citizenships.

Al-Dahoum urged voters to choose their representatives in consideration of the country’s interests and not based on limited personal interests. Also, former MP Ali Al-Deqbasi said the decision to boycott the elections was based on their patriotic stance against any manipulation of the laws of the elections. He urged citizens to create a positive change in the country through their votes, insisting that it is not right for candidates to just participate in the elections just to become MPs and then settle with just talking during parliamentary sessions.

He affirmed that MPs must work towards solving problems and confronting challenges. Addressing the people of Kuwait, Secretary General of authors gathering Mefrah Al-Dawsari said, “Your vote will shape the future of this country”. He thanked those who boycotted the last elections and then decided to participate in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, a candidate from the Third Constituency Abdulwahab Al- Rashid presented four pivotal points during the forum, including the importance of participation in the elections, and the performance of the parliament and government in the last phase. He pointed out the deterioration of freedoms and increase in the costs of fuel, electricity and water, indicating that the only advantage of the dissolved parliament is that it offered citizens direct access to the Constitutional Court.

He insisted that the upcoming parliament must work on confronting wastage of state revenues. In addition, a candidate from the Second Constituency Dr Bader AMulla said, “The country is faced with a major problem, which is the governmental and parliamentary corruption”. He stressed that the DNA law is an example of the legislative disorder, as this law violates the Kuwaiti Constitution and the religious instructions. He expressed gratitude to His Highness the Amir for insisting on the review of the DNA law.
