KUWAIT CITY, Jan 10: An Initiative of the champion Balsam Al-Ayoub as a means to promote awareness, culture and sports through workshops and activities. It also contributes to stimulate women’s health, sports and culture.

Being a strong long-term sustainable project in partnership with the global campaign launched by the United Nations, which focuses on women and society and modern issues of international concern.

Balsam Al-Ayoub organized a sporting and cultural awareness tournamentcalled “Be Strong” which focuses on female empowerment through the promotion of health, culture and sports. It also raises awareness on the importance of exercise and focus on women’s mental health as well as their physical health all under the supervision as well as participation of specialists in the fields through the organization of workshops and training programs.

The first initiative program  of “Be Strong” was launched at Box Hill College for girls in Kuwait which included 600 students. The program was superbly beneficial as the girls were able to access the program directly and effectively through their participation in the work, lectures, workshops as well as various sporting events.

First Lieutenant Fatima Al-Buhasan gave a lecture titled “I am my own weapon” and Ms Mona Al-Arfaj hosted a workshop titled “Inner Peace” and Ms Shaima Bin Hsein’s workshop titled “My decision is my choice”. Dr Michelle Pheiffer hosted a workshop on peace and inner mental stability through art. Ms Fatma Mubarak hosted a lecture on positive energy and mental strength and Dr Lamia Shaaban a workshop titled “Eat smart be strong”. Balsam Al-Ayoub provided a sports training workshop that taught the participants daily exercise routines as well as a lecture entitled “what’s important is to be, not to look”.

The program lasted for 3 days and included safety awareness and therapy through arts and positive energy, health and nutrition, sports training and effective lectures and discussions.

Ms Balsam Al-Ayoub said “Be Strong” is an amazing, comprehensive program that is available all year round. The event at BoxHill college is the first of many events that will be hosted throughout the year. It contributes positively to female empowerment and builds women’s self-esteem and self-confidence which coincided with the debut campaign of the United Nations that aims to end violence against women. Alongside the “Be Strong” program, there is a great opportunity to launch the UN program alongside “Be Strong” through awareness through the quality of lectures, workshops and focus topics.

We are very happy, pleased and proud at the quality of participation whether it be from the students or the working team. Balsam Al-Ayoub focused on the steps required to bring awareness through this program to an important topic that needed to be addressed: Female empowerment. Al-Ayoub brought focus to this topic through this program through all the events hosted. A woman is as strong as her self-confidence is. This can all be achieved through empowering women to be cultured, educated, healthy, balanced physically and mentally, and these are things that Ms Al-Ayoub thinks can be achieved through sports.

Balsam Al-Ayoub is a decorated Kuwaiti fencing champion who works in the field of female empowerment and gender equality in the sports field. Recently Balsam Al-Ayoub has been working  on the concept of building cultural awareness in her community and she focuses through her programs and initiatives to promote the concept of sports through its application and practice and gives women the opportunity in the field of sports more specifically through her program “Be Strong”.

Balsam Al-Ayoub opened up a gate-way for female empowerment using sports as a key tool, while integrating other activities such as culture, arts, scientific training to give the opportunity to women and girls in achieving a balanced lifestyle as well as supporting women through various community issues , one of these issues is the UN campaign to end violence against women.

The UN campaign is a global campaign with several participants, including the participation of the public sector, the private sector and as well as involving the community/society through the activation and stimulation of awareness in the fight against the negative effects of sexual discrimination against women.

Al-Ayoub emphasizes that sports can be an effective tool in the fight against those societal issues faced by women around the world, which are not related to religion nor social classes but are beliefs that have become customary through time in societies and now is the time to see a change.

“Be Strong” is a message to every woman to be strong in her culture, in her education, in her inner-balance and in her health.
