Bangladeshi politician held in Kuwait on human trafficking and money laundering charges

KUWAIT CITY, Jun 7: The Criminal Investigation Department in Kuwait arrested a Bangladeshi parliamentarian who is widely known in his country as “Kazi Papul”, on charges including human trafficking (trade of residencies and visas) and money laundering.

The prosecution heard testimonies of 5 expatriates of Bangladeshi nationals who confirmed that they had paid amounts of up to 3000 dinars in exchange for coming to Kuwait, and that they were also paying annually in exchange for renewing their residency.

According to Dhaka Tribune which carried the news that MP Mohammad Shahid Islam was arrested from his home in Mishref area at approximately 9.30 pm (Kuwait time) on Saturday.

The Ambassador of Bangladesh in Kuwait, SM Abul Kalam, stated that he had heard the news of the arrest of the MP of his country’s parliament this morning and that he was communicating with the Kuwaiti authorities in this regard.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs in Bangladesh, Abu Al-Kalam Abdul-Moamen, confined himself to confirming that the Ambassador of Bangladesh in Kuwait informed him of the arrest of the MP in a case brought up because of his actions there.
“We do not know anything officially,” said Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Muhammad Shahriar Alam. Our embassy is checking with the local authorities. ” “Even a convict is entitled to consular support from the homeland under the law,” he said. “It is unpleasant.”
