Algeria edge Tunisia to win Arab Cup; Qatar finish 3rd

DOHA, Dec 18, (Agencies): Amir Sayoud scored a wonderful goal as Algeria beat Tunisia 2-0 to win the FIFA Arab Cup on Saturday. The match lived up to the hype as action swung from one side to the other like a pedulum on the bar. Both teams were guilty of missed chances in the first half. The best moment of the game came in the 99th of extra time when Sayoud broke the deadlock with a direct strike outside the box to the delight of the vociferous Algerian fans. After going behind Tunisia increased the tempo but couldn’t find the equalizer.

Yacine Brahimi ended Tunisia hopes with the second goal deep in injury time of extra time Meshaal Barsham was the hero as hosts Qatar edged Egypt 5-4 on penalties to clinch 3rd place in the 2021 FIFA Arab. Both regulation and extra times ended goalless. The match started on a brighter note as both teams came out of their shell for an opening goal but on numerous occasion were denied by outstanding goalkeeping especially by Barsham. Egypt had the best of chances to win the game in regulation time but failed to convert the numerous chances they had. The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) announced Saturday that its chief Gianni Infantino would submit a proposal on making Arabic as an official language at the federation. This coincides with marking the World Arabic Language Day and the end of FIFA Arab Cup competition, which is held for the first time under the umbrella of FIFA, the federation said in a press statement.
