KUWAIT CITY, April 28: The Criminal Court presided over by Judge Abdullah Al-Othman sentenced in absentia the former director general of Public Authority of Social Security Fahad Al-Raj’an to ten-year imprisonment with hard labor.

His former deputy Yaqoub Al-Muzaini was also handed the same sentence in his presence. The presiding judge declared that civil aspect of the case was not within prerogative of the court.

The former senior government officials were found guilty of misappropriating public funds in case known as ‘Share Options’ after they invested the money in the American bourse without carrying out thorough studies.

The Public Prosecution previously issued an arrest warrant in absentia against Al-Raj’an and sent the same to the Interpol.

According to the criminal case No 159/2015 concerning public funds recorded under the registration number 21/2015, the suspects abused their privileges to violate the decisions of Minister of Finance and the regulations governing the institution they headed.

They traded with funds of the institution in high risk investment deals through which the country lost huge sums of money and it affected the financial status of the country.
