KUWAIT CITY, Jan 17: The number of smokers in Kuwait has reached 43 percent of the total population last year, as per a report released by Oxford Economics Group, the UK’s leading economic forecasting group, reports Al-Anba daily.
Smokers consumed a total of 6.029 billion cigarettes last year, with local legal consumption accounting for 5.933 billion cigarettes. The number of illegally imported cigarettes reached 61 million. Smokers used 25 million cigarettes smuggled from various countries and 8 million cigarettes smuggled from Iraq.
They also smoked 2 million cigarettes from the UAE’s Free Trade Zone. The amount of revenues from legal cigarettes reached KD 64.9 million. While about 97.6 percent of the total number of smokers in Kuwait use legal local cigarettes, 2.3 percent of all smokers use imported cigarettes
