‘40 pct of women have osteoporosis’ – ‘Kuwait’s one of the highest in world’

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 21: Head of Endocrine Glands Department at Al-Amiri Hospital and Chairperson of Kuwait Osteoporosis Society Dr Nadia Al-Ali said 40 percent of women in Kuwait have osteoporosis – one of the highest in the world. In her statement on the sidelines of the society’s press conference, Al-Ali disclosed 35 percent of women above 50 years old worldwide are suffering from the disease and fractures, compared to 20 percent of men in Kuwait and that percentage for men is constant.

Al-Ali warned about the risks of suffering from osteoporosis in terms of fractures which are also increasing in Kuwait and the neighboring countries, especially hip and thigh bone fractures, affirming that efforts have been intensified to reduce the percentage. She affirmed the society has been laying down strategies for effective diagnosis and treatment of the disease since 2009.

She said specialized clinics have been provided in every government hospital, in addition to conducting awareness programs for doctors throughout the year. She added about 200 people suffer from osteoporosis and this disease is one of the causes of bone fractures among 8.9 million people annually
