‘3.4 million tickets issued for traffic violations from Jan 1-Nov 30’

Strong moral values ‘vital’ for anti-drugs campaign

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 28: Traffic police issued up to 3.4 million citations between January 1 and end of November 2022 and 170 people died in accidents during the same period, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Interior. Ninety-two percent of the of traffic accidents in the six governorates were attributed to distraction during driving and eight percent were related to diverse other causes. Total number of the accidents, linked to lack of focus, reached 4,594. The Capital recorded the highest rate 1,262 accidents, Hawally 1,015, Farwaniya 669, Jahra 468, Ahmadi 730 and Mubarak Al-Kabeer 450. Number of deaths during the same duration reached 170 males and 18 female individuals.

The highest proportion was in Jahra, 52, 31 percent, and the lowest in Hawally, 10 deaths, six percent of the total fatalities. Age of the demised adults ranged between 31 and 40 and the lowest age ranged between a month and 10 years. Major General Mohammad Al-Otaibi, the director general of the penalties division, told KUNA that violations are either registered directly by the traffic police or via cameras, affirming that the cameras are installed on all the main roads and at various public locations.

Most of the accidents happen due to usage of mobile phones, he said advising motorists to keep their vehicle reasonably apart from the one ahead. He stressed on the necessity of using seat belts, abstaining from speeding, using the mobile phone while driving and keeping children on the back seat, affirming that the regulations are intended to protect motorists.

A number of educators stressed on Wednesday the importance of boosting and solidifying moral values in society as the best preemptive step against the spread of illegal drugs in Kuwait. In various statements to KUNA, the experts affirmed that boosting moral values and the importance of family at schools and various public institutes would enable people to better fend off the dangers of narcotics and illicit substances.

Good values In this regard, a former academic at the Kuwait University’s Faculty of Sharia and Islamic studies, Dr. Omar Al-Shaiji said that bolstering good values in society, in general, would be beneficial to the fight against drug use and addiction, adding that parents should be aware of the power of positive reinforcement when dealing with their children.

The process of bringing up children should be a balanced approach and it should avoid the pits created by negligence or becoming too harsh and over-controlling, Al-Shaji added. The media has a role in promoting good values and morals, he affirmed, saying that state entities should work together to defend society from narcotics and addiction. On his part, the head of the Islamic studies department at the Ministry of Education Dr. Yaaqoub Al-Loughani indicated that children, youth, and minors should be focused upon in the campaign to prevent the proliferation of drugs.

Setting plans and filling time for this sector of society is paramount to prevent them from being lost in the hollow and dark labyrinths of addiction, he pointed out, noting that Islamic values and traditions were of great worth: therefore, society should be clinging to and promoting positive behavior before all hope was lost.
