‘1st day of Eid al-Fitr to be on June 15’

KUWAIT CITY, June 6: The Department of Astronomy and Space at the Scientific Club Wednesday announced that the first day of Eid al-Fitr for the month of Shawwal in the astronomical year 1439 AH will fall on Friday, June 15.

Director of the department Ali Abdul- Kareem Bouabbas said the conjunction of birth of the crescent for the month of Shawwal will occur on Wednesday, June 13 at 22:43 Kuwait time, and according to astronomical calculations, sunset will be at 18:47 and the moon sighted at 19:27 on Thursday, 29th of Ramadan for approximately 18 hours and 36 minutes.

He explained the Crescent will remain for almost 40 minutes after sunset, and the angle of elongation will be approximately 11 degrees; thus making sighting of the crescent possible in the event of proper weather conditions
